Dirty Carpets Affect your HealthDid you know that carpets in general can hold things like fungi, mold, mildew, toxins, pesticides, bacteria and more, but dirty carpets can have these dangers in such high quantities that your very home can be hazardous to your health and that of your family? It can be scary to think about, that as our children play on the carpets or we lay down on the carpet to just relax with friends or family that a danger lurks beneath the surface. Because of those dangers carpet cleaning should be an integral part of keeping a home clean and keeping the home environment healthy for those who live within it.

Dirty Carpets Affect your Health

It’s a startling fact that the EPA has estimated that 80% of all human exposure to pesticides happens indoors and that dirty carpets can hold up to 8 times their weight in dirt, toxins, bacteria, fungi and more. Poor indoor air quality can cause minor health problems from allergies and respiratory issues to major health problems such as poisoning from toxins and pesticides in the carpets. The EPA and many health agencies recommended that regular carpet cleaning be done in the home semi-annually to reduce the risks of exposure to these dangers.

Some of the dangers present in dirty carpets where regular carpet cleaning isn’t done:

  1. Campylobacter – A bacteria that is found in damp carpets during the winter months that causes severe bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever and even death. It can be very dangerous to those with a compromised immune system, but regular carpet cleaning can kill the bacteria before it becomes a danger.
  2. Norowalk Virus A.K.A the Norovirus – A virus that can cause severe flu and stomach issues that survives in the carpets for months at a time. It like many other flu strains is more dangerous to children, the elderly and the infirm.
  3. Kawasaki Syndrome – This illness happens when people inhale bacteria and chemical toxins from the carpets that adhere to their lungs, causing physical disabilities and even death at times.
  4. Salmonella – This pathogen can lead to diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps when it is tracked into the home by everyone from adults and children to pets. Carpeting cleaning is an effective way to remove the pathogen from the carpets.

Carpet cleaning is something that should be done regularly in the home to reduce or even completely eliminate the bacteria, toxins, mold, dirt and more that is prevalent is dirty carpets. There are risks everyday as we go out into the world, but our homes should be a safe haven for us to come home to aty night and with regular carpet cleaning that can become a reality.
