The Rug Cleaning Process (click to expand each section)

We will analyze your rug and determine the type of rug you have and its qualities that may determine how we clean it. We will generate a cleaning strategy and inform you of the expected results. Bob’s Carpet Care will pick up your rug from your home.

The Eureka Company determined that a 9 x 12 rug could hide 87 pounds of dirt! Hand-knotted and woven rugs can hide soil efficiently so we utilize different techniques to “dust” the rugs from the front and the back. A pile lifter machine and other special vacuum attachments may be needed to remove dry soil particles. This is one of the most important step in cleaning quality fabrics and textiles.

If necessary, the rug will be pre-treated to emulsify residual soil and dirt.  This will depend on the type of soil still present  and the type of fiber in your rug.

Difficult to clean spots will be pre-treated with special solutions to increase chances of a complete cleaning process. The fringe is also pre-treated to achieve maximum cleaning and soil removal.

A special Oriental Rug Shampoo is used to clean most rugs.  It is designed to effect maximum cleaning and protect natural fibers which are particularly sensitive to harsh detergents.

Your rug, depending on the type it is, will then be rinsed on both sides with extraction equipment; or it may be put in a specially designed wash pit to be thoroughly washed and rinsed.

After the soil is rinsed away from the rug, it is hung to dry or dried flat.  This is done in a controlled environment. To avoid shrinking, it is important to dry the rug properly.

When the rug is completely dried, it is combed and finished with soft groomers which are especially designed for rugs.

Our qualified technicians give perform a final inspection and then approve the rug for release and delivery.

Caring for your Oriental Rug and Carpets

  • Rotation – Your rugs should be rotated once a year to ensure even wear. If it is a high traffic area, rotate every six months. If is is a low traffic area, you can rotate as little as once every two years.
  • Vacuuming – Like most carpets, oriental rugs should be regularly vacuumed to minimize dirt and revive the rug’s fibers. Avoid vacuuming the fringe with your beater bar! The proper way is to use the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.
  • Padding – To protect from dirt, wear and slippage, use a quality pad used under the rug.

Dealing with Spots and Spills

If possible, immediately clean up spills and spots before they set.

  1. Use a clean absorbent material to blot excess liquid. Do not rub or brush the stain.
  2. Use a mild-detergent, white-vinegar water solution to spot clean the mess. Do not wet too much.
  3. Use water and a small amount of vinegar to thoroughly rinse the area. Do not wet the rug’s backing.
  4. Keep blotting until most of the liquid and moisture is absorbed.
  5. Allow the rug to air dry. You may use a fan or a hair dryer (on cool setting) to speed up the drying time.
  6. Please contact us if the stains are not removed completely.
