The Rug Cleaning Process (click to expand each section)

Bob’s Carpet Care will pick up your rug from your home or office.  A trained technician will examine your rug to determine the type of rug you have and its qualities.  This information will be used to generate a cleaning strategy or “prescription”.  The technician will inform you of the predicted results so there will be no surprises.

Hand-knotted and woven rugs can hide soil and dirt efficiently.  Before we wash your rug, it is necessary to remove the embedded dirt.  Different methods are used to “dust” the rugs from the front and the back. A pile lifter machine and other vacuuming tools may be needed to remove as much as possible the residual dry soil particles. Removing the hidden dirt before you get the rug wet is very important.

If necessary, the rug will be pre-treated to emulsify remaining dirt particles.  This will depend on how much dirt is present and the type of rug you have.

Next, the fringe is pre-treated so it can be cleaned properly.  Difficult to clean spots, if they exist, will also be pre-treated with special solutions to better clean the rug.

Most rugs are then cleaned with a special Oriental Rug Shampoo.  This shampoo is specially formulated to give maximum cleaning power yet not damage the rug’s natural fibers.

After shampoo, your rug is then be rinsed on both sides with extraction equipment; or your rug may be further washed and rinsed in a wash pit designed for this purpose.

When clean, your rug will be hung up to dry, or laid down flat to dry.  Drying is done in a controlled environment to minimize shrinking,

After drying, your rug is combed and finished with soft groomers.

Finally, your rug is inspected to make sure it is as clean as it can be before it is returned to you.

Oriental Rugs: Care and Maintenance

  • Rotation – Your rugs should be rotated once a year to even out its usage. If the rug is in a high traffic area, it should be rotated once every six months. If it is in a low traffic area, rotation can be once per two years.
  • Vacuuming – Like carpets, rugs should be vacuumed on a regularly basis.  Removing soil and dirt will preserve your rugs longevity. Do not vacuuming the fringe with your beater bar: you should use the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.
  • Padding – To protect from wear, slippage, and dirt, put a quality pad under the rug.

Managing Spots and Spills

When there is a spill, try to clean up spills and spots immediately before they set.

  1. Get a clean absorbent cloth and blot off excess liquid. Do not rub or scrub.
  2. Get a mild-detergent, white-vinegar water solution and spot clean the affected area. Do not over wet.
  3. Get water and a small amount of vinegar and rinse the area. Do not over wet.
  4. Keep blotting and drying until the moisture is removed as best as possible.
  5. Air dry the rug or carpet. If necessary, us a fan or a hair dry set to “low” to blow dry the area.
  6. If the stains are not removed completely, contact us for advise.
