Our trained technician will examine your rug and establish the type of rug you have and its properties.  This information is used to generate a cleaning strategy or “prescription” on how to best clean your rug.  We will inform you of the anticipated results so you will know exactly what we do, and what will happen.   Your rug will be picked up from your home and taken to Bob’s Carpet Care facility.

A few years back, Eureka Co discovered that a 9 x 12 rug could hold within its fibers 87 pounds of dirt!  Not surprising: hand-knotted and woven rugs are know to retain soil and dirt.  We use various techniques to “dust” the rugs front and back to remove any hidden dirt and soil. A pile lifter machine and other vacuum attachments are used to remove dry soil particles. It is very important to remove the dry, encrusted soil before getting the rug wet.

After the bulk of the dried dirt is removed, your rug may be pre-treated to emulsify (break up) remaining soil and dirt.  This is done if necessary, and if your type of rug is suitable for pre-conditioning.

If we see any difficult to clean spots, these will be pre-treated with special solutions to better clean the rug. The fringe is also pre-treated to achieve maximum cleaning potential.

Your rug is cleaned with a special Oriental Rug Shampoo.  The shampoo is designed for maximum cleaning and yet gentle enough to protect your rug’s natural fibers.

Your rug is then further cleaned: depending on the type of rug it is, it can be rinsed on both sides with extraction equipment; or it can be put in a wash pit (designed for rugs) where it will be  thoroughly washed and rinsed.

After extensive treatments, conditioning, washing and rinsing, your rug is ready to be dried.  It is either hung to dry or dried flat in a controlled environment. It is important to dry the rug properly and promptly to minimize shrinkage.

After it is completely dry, your rug is combed and finished with soft groomers which are especially designed for rugs.

The last step of the process involves having our qualified specialist perform an inspection for quality and thorough cleaning before your cleaned rug is returned to your home.

Maintaining your Oriental Rugs

  • Rotation – To ensure even wear, rotate your rugs once a year. For high traffic areas, you can rotate once every 6 months. For low traffic areas, you can rotate once every 2 years.
  • Vacuuming – Like carpets, oriental and fine rugs should be vacuumed regularly.  Removing the dirt and soil will preserve the rug’s fibers.  Avoid vacuuming the fringe with a beater bar – try using the end of a vacuum hose from a canister vacuum.
  • Padding – It is recommended to use a quality pad under the rug.  This will protect the carpet from dirt, wear and slippage.

How to Deal with Spots and Spills

Whenever possible, clean up spills and spots immediately before they set.

  1. Blot spilled liquid with a clean absorbent cloth. Do not scrub or brush the stain.
  2. Use a mild-detergent, white-vinegar water solution to spot clean the affected area. Do not over wet.
  3. Use water and a small amount of vinegar to carefully rinse the area. Do over wet.
  4. Continue blotting with a clean and absorbent material until most of the liquid is gone.
  5. Let the area air dry. If you need the area to dry quickly, use a fan or a hair dryer (set on “cool”) to reduce drying time.
  6. Please contact us if the stains and spots are not effectively removed.
